The Games Of June: Comparing 2010 Through 2014

Welcome, data heads, to another monthly retrospective. We’ve just updated May’s roundup with the NPD data we were waiting for, and the industry seems to be swinging back.

This month brings us some interesting changes, as more ID@Xbox games have rolled out (quietly), the Xbox One is now available without Kinect, and Nintendo continues to post big numbers for Mario Kart 8. Before we hit the summer slump, let’s look at what June 2014 has to offer.

We’ve included NPD data for the years gone by and will update this story with June’s NPD data once its available in July. As a reminder, NPD covers United States retail only. It's used as a data point for trends.

Should The Term "Survival Horror" Die?

about X hours ago from

I’ve always considered myself a big survival-horror fan, but the more I thought about it, the less I understand what the term “survival horror” even means – especially in this day and age. I had a conversation with Game Informer’s resident horror expert Tim Turi to find out what exactly we think survival horror is, if it’s even a genre that still exists today, and whether or not the term should be shot in the head and burned so it doesn’t come back.

Harry: With Evil Within coming out soon, I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what everyone seems to mean when they talk about “survival horror” as a genre. It seems that, especially in recent generations, nobody can quite agree on what it means to be a survival horror game. Whenever a game with horror elements like Dead Space or Resident Evil comes out, some people think it’s a good example of a survival-horror game, and others say it isn’t “horror” enough or it isn’t “survival” enough, etc. So I wanted to talk about survival horror and what role it still has in gaming today.

Test Chamber – Zen Studios' Deadpool Pinball Table

Test Chamber – Zen Studios' Deadpool Pinball Table

Zen Studios released a new table for Pinball FX 2/Zen Pinball 2 this week, featuring the merc with a mouth, Deadpool. Ben Reeves provides commentary and shares some comic-book knowledge as Jeff Marchiafava and I battle in a head-to-head match. Who will win? Watch our new Test Chamber and find out.

Jeff Marchiafava has been my pinball nemesis since the first Pinball FX was released on the Xbox 360. He's continued to annoy me throughout the years, methodically going through the leaderboards and sniping all of my previous high scores. With this episode, we face off on even ground. He can't spend eight continuous hours honing his skills here. Instead, we have 10 minutes to see who can rack up the most points. Who will win? If nothing else, I can promise it will be a Jeff.

The Kickstarter Compendium

Our regularly revised feature keeps you up to date on the Kickstarter games worth watching, and helps you track projects both before and after they’re funded.

Welcome to the Kickstarter Compendium, a gathering of games and game-related projects that we’ve come across that deserve your attention. The crowd-funding model for video games has resulted in some fascinating new game ideas, and new projects are going up on a weekly basis that deserve your attention.

The only problem is keeping track of it all – what’s worth watching, and what are these different projects about? As an ongoing feature, our Kickstarter Compendium is your guide to games seeking funding through Kickstarter. After funding projects are complete, this feature will also track what games (and game-related projects) got funded and what games didn’t, and where possible, offer links to the projects as they are developed.

What's New In Far Cry 4

about X hours ago from

With Far Cry 4, Ubisoft Montreal recruited a fresh creative director. Alex Hutchinson had just wrapped up Assassin's Creed III, and his passion for creating systemic, player-driven narrative meshed well with the interests of the Far Cry development team. While there was a lot to love about the gameplay in Far Cry 3, the lead developers all had areas that they wanted to improve for the sequel. We spoke with Hutchinson about the debates behind including open-world co-op and what they've learned from games like Army of Two: 40th Day, Left 4 Dead, and Gears of War.

Watch the interview below to learn what they're changing from Far Cry 3 and what Hutchinson sees as the most difficult aspect of the game's development.

We’ll be updating this list throughout the rest of 2014, so check back with us as your future backlog begins to pile up. We're being conservative about some of the titles that were shown without gameplay, so if you see something you think should be on the list, let us know. We'll check back in and keep the conversation going.

Batman: Arkham Knight (Xbox One, PS4, PC) - 2015Rocksteady is donning cape and cowl for one last go at the Arkham series. This final title in the series will be on PC and new-gen hardware only, so if you want to see who is under the Arkham Knight’s mask (no, the title doesn’t refer to Batman), you’ll have to upgrade.
