Game Informer’s Most Anticipated Games of 2015

If we could stare into the future and find out which games are going to turn out great, our jobs would be a lot easier. So many changes happen to a game in the final months before release that it’s quite common for a game-of-the-year candidate to come out of left field to surprise everyone. But until all of 2015’s games are finished, we can only guess at their final quality. However, that doesn’t stop our editorial team from doing what every gamer does: dreaming about awesome projects on the horizon. We’ve voted and tallied our top choices for games that are targeting release in 2015, and compiled them here.

To complete our list, we asked each of our editorial team members to look at a list of all titles with announced release dates in 2015, as well as titles that we deemed likely to hit sometime during that year. Everyone ranked their top 10 choices, and then we added up the combined results.

The DualShock 4 Is The PlayStation 4's Achilles Heel

Nearly a year into the console generation, the PlayStation 4 has proven to be a strong rebound console for Sony, outpacing its nearest rival at nearly a two-to-one clip. This is a much better start than the PS3 had, which alienated consumers with sticker shock early on and proved to be a finicky platform for developers due to the unique architecture of the Cell processor. Thanks to Mark Cerny's developer-friendly architectural design, an improved PlayStation network, and slightly better graphical capabilities than the Xbox One, the PS4 looks to be on strong footing moving forward.

After spending the majority of my time gaming on the Xbox 360 last generation, I find myself using the PS4 as my console of choice for third-party games these days. But if there's one area the console that needs improvement, it's the controller. 

This feels like a strange statement to make considering how much of an improvement the DualShock 4 is over its predecessors; its improved trigger placement, concave analog sticks, and touchpad are all noteworthy modifications that make it the most ergonomically friendly controller Sony has made to date. But after extensive use I find it to be lacking in several important areas. So what are these major drawbacks?

The Pick 13 system allows for a great deal of loadout customization, and combines with new mobility added to the core Call of Duty gameplay to create a fresh approach to the first-person shooter staple. We quickly go over the customization system and jump into a few matches at rank 1, including a standard team deathmatch round and a match of the new basketball-style Uplink mode.

In the world of digital card games, how trading is handled is always an interesting topic of discussion. Some games, like Hearthstone, eschew trading completely and handle the question with card destruction and crafting, while others like Magic: The Gathering Online handle things in a more traditional fashion. Stone Blade Entertainment’s SolForge is targeting mid-November for a new sharing system that we’ve got the exclusive details on.

With the sharing system, players can share a copy of a card with another player, which will make both copies of the card unsharable. If you’re looking to make your friend’s top tier deck card for card, that player could share an entire playset of the card. This would result in both sets of the card becoming unsharable from that point out, but it essentially makes it so that any card out in the wild can actually act as two functional, playable copies of the card.

All cards purchased with gold are sharable, and this system will make creation of certain decks much easier. Collection hunters will also find that the sharing feature makes obtaining some of the harder to track down rare cards to be much more painless. Since players actually aren’t giving up their own copy of the card, this feature will encourage social sharing and friends coming together to build up decks and collections.

Super Replay – Resident Evil Code: Veronica Episode 2

Earlier this year we relived the Mansion Incident by simultaneously playing through both the 1996 and 2002 versions of Resident Evil. Months later we're still retreading the series' past, this time with the HD remake of the 2000 Dreamcast title Resident Evil Code: Veronica. We're joined by a special guest from Capcom as we return to Claire Redfield's second adventure, which shares surprising parallels with her new starring role in Resident Evil Revelations 2 (check out our cover story reveal).

Both Code: Veronica and Revelations 2 begin with Claire waking up on a remote prison island, locked away in a dirty prison cell. Resident Evil Revelations 2 producer Michiteru Okabe also says Revelations 2 has a strong focus on family - a powerful theme running throughout Code: Veronica as well. That's only the beginning of the many similarities we spot throughout our tense playthrough of one of Resident Evil's most punishing, lengthy entries.

Halloween and the month of October is over, so it’s time to wind down from intentionally scary stuff. We exchange the horror movies for family comedies about Thanksgiving and Christmas, and put away the zombies and shotguns in favor of family-friendly multiplayer affairs that can be enjoyed by all your in-laws coming over for dinner.

As you’re cleansing your palette however, you might want to look a little closer at these seemingly harmless games and identify the horrifying universes they contain.

Katamari DamacyKatamari is a series even non-gamers love for its fantastic soundtrack and absurdity. It’s fun to roll a ball around environments and watch it grow as it collects more items, but put Katamari in the context of its world and you see a universe we should all be thankful we do not live in.

Replay – Time Commando

In Time Commando, Stanley must explore a simulation of the past to save the present by collecting yellow triangles, fighting bears, and battling Loy. Armed with only our awkward yellow jumpsuit and a powerful forward leap, it's up to us to do some sort of ambiguous heroics.

To be honest, we're not exactly sure what's going on, but it involves history and Time Commando did it way before Assassin's Creed. Join Andrew Reiner, Tim Turi, Jeff Cork , and me as we "Fight our way through time... or be history."
