Funny To A Point – Top Ten Edition

about X hours ago from

No matter who you are or where your interests lie, everyone loves a good Top Ten list – a fact that's decuply true for gamers. Join me this week as I delve deep into the appeal of the venerable Top Ten list and provide my own Top Ten Funnies To A Point. Funny To A Points. Funny To Points(?). Top Ten Of These Dumb Columns.

Top Ten lists were created a long time ago, and are still just as popular today. Gamers especially flock to the Top Ten format; based on my own analysis, I approximate that Top Ten lists constitute nearly 87% of all games journalism.* The mighty Top Ten is one of G.I.'s longest-running features, and aside from a dedicated list in every issue, the rankings invade countless features and sidebars, including our yearly roundup of the Top Ten moments, disappointments, developers, and dorks (who could forget the dorks?). Top Ten lists will continue to be popular until the sun engulfs the earth, which will probably be commemorated with a list of the Top Ten Calming Mantras To Repeat While Bursting Into Flames.

The Secrets Behind South Park’s Pain-Staking Animation

about X hours ago from

Before joining Ubisoft as a senior animator for South Park: The Fractured But Whole, Lucas Walker spent six years working on the show itself at South Park Studios. As one of the primary liaisons between the game and the show, Walker helped make sure that The Fractured But Whole looks as authentic as possible. However, the show has a brutal animation process that is hard to emulate in the game. During our conversation with Walker, he talked about why The Fractured But Whole was so challenging to animate and how close Stick of Truth actually got to emulating the show’s aesthetic.

Test Chamber – Storming The Countryside In Battlefield 1's Singleplayer Campaign

Battlefield 1 is now finally out in all its gruesome glory. Our review isn't quite ready yet but but fellow editor Andrew Reiner and I decided to play through two small snippets from the campaign to give you a taste of the game as well as our thoughts about it.

In this segment, we gallop across the sands as one of Lawrence of Arabia's special operatives, Zara, and then we fend off the German offensive in Italy while wearing a suit of armor and wielding a massive machine-gun. No, really. That's a thing happens.

You can watch the whole thing here:

What We Want To See With The Nintendo Switch

What We Want To See With The Nintendo Switch

Today we got our first look at the Nintendo Switch, previously codenamed the Nintendo NX, and we are eager to know more. Even after Nintendo simply teased that an announcement was coming today, the company's stock value raised by $1 billion overnight. Anticipation continues to rise, but we still have a lot of questions. Will Nintendo continue to support the 3DS if the Nintendo Switch is more of a unified console, blending functionalities of a home console and handheld device? Will third-party support continue to grow or be more successful than it was on the Wii U?

Game Informer editors share their concerns and hopes for what they would like to see with the Nintendo Switch, as we near its March 2017 release.

Breaking Down The Red Dead Redemption 2 Trailer

Breaking Down The Red Dead Redemption 2 Trailer

We just got our first, brief glimpse of Rockstar’s return to the wild west. The trailer opens with several idyllic environmental shots of the frontier, backed by a soft, violin and piano-driven score, ending with a shot of an armed posse on horseback charging across the plains toward snow-covered mountains. So what should we make of the early look at Red Dead Redemption 2? We performed a shot-by-shot analysis of the trailer to extract any intel we could possibly find. Read on to learn more:

Signs Point To Late 1800s SettingA few clues in the trailer helped us triangulate the timeframe in which Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place. In the shot of Worth’s General Store, you can see an electric light lining the muddy street. The earliest use of electric street lighting in the United States was 1880. That is also the relative time period many oil fields started popping up in the heartland, which we see in another shot later in the trailer. The large buffalo herd implies that this may take place before the species nearly went extinct around the turn of the century, with a mere 300 bison in existence by 1900. These signs point to Red Dead Redemption 2 being set before the events of the original, which took place in 1911.

Question Of The Month: What's The Nerdiest Game Conversation You've Ever Had?

Question Of The Month: What's The Nerdiest Game Conversation You've Ever Had?

In the latest issue of Game Informer, some readers shared the nerdiest video game conversation they've ever had. Now it's your turn to get in on the self-deprecating revelry.

As gamers, we've all had heated debates about video games that would leave most non-gamers shaking their heads. And that's okay – sharing (and sometimes arguing over) our enthusiasm for characters, stories, and gameplay mechanics is part of what makes video games so great.

Thankfully, our readers didn't disappoint. Those who responded regaled us with tales of fighting over hero match-ups (Samus would totally beat Masterchief in a fight, by the way), the inconsistencies of the official Zelda timeline, and the classic PC vs. console debate.

Blog Herding – The Best Blogs Of The Community (October 20, 2016)

This week is short and sweet – so you can enjoy some blogs and get back to gaming and writing. And before you know it, the steady stream of holiday blockbusters will be upon us. That's either good or bad, depending on your backlog (mine is now an entire hockey duffle bag under my bed, hidden away like an embarrassing secret).

Community Blogs For October 13 – October 19:

When Bad Games Do Good Blogger Psykologic makes a great point: Sometimes games that are bad at launch become fantastic after some patching and updates. Heck, he even mentions how BioWare "fixed" Mass Effect 3's ending (which was fine the first time, for me, and really didn't change much through the update), making fans happier and keeping them loyal.
