Nintendo kills the Wii U, at least in Japan

Nintendo has quietly updated its Japanese website to say that production of the Wii U, at least domestically, has ended. As spotted by Kotaku, the listings for the console now include the phrase "Production End (Within Japan.)" We've known since last November that executives were sharpening the axe, but not when they'd actually swing it. Either way, if you've been holding out on buying a Wii U, it's probably worth getting a wriggle on.

'Super Mario Run' made Nintendo $53 million

How well has Nintendo's first experiment in mobile gaming fared so far? Quite well... though it's not enough for the company's tastes. The gaming giant has revealed that Super Mario Run has pulled in more than ¥6 billion ($53 million) in revenue since its December launch. That isn't a whole lot for a company used to selling far more expensive games, but it's very healthy for a mobile title that's less than two months old. And Nintendo is better than most at turning users into paying customers. Out of 78 million total downloads, more than 5 percent forked over the money to unlock everything. Games consultant Serkan Toto tells the Wall Street Journal that this is "amazing" for a game with one $10 in-app purchase. Most rivals can't hit 5 percent even with $1 or $2 purchases.

Nintendo delays its 'Animal Crossing' mobile game

Fans of Isabelle and K.K. Slider will need to wait a little while longer before they can play Animal Crossing on their smartphones. As part of its latest earnings release, Nintendo has revealed that the upcoming mobile adaptation won't be released in March as planned. Referencing Fire Emblem Heroes, which launches on February 2nd, and Super Mario Run, which comes to Android in March, the company said: "To accommodate the releases and operation of these applications, we have revised the release schedule for Animal Crossing." It's now scheduled for "the next fiscal year," which could be any time between April 2017 and March 2018.

Exploring what made the 'Doom' and 'Titanfall 2' campaigns tick

The new Doom was almost one of my favorite games last year. While it was edged out at the last minute, there's no denying how refreshing the game was. Developer id's laser-focus on speed, making the player throw caution to the wind and tossing modern shooter conventions out the window was incredibly exciting. Titanfall 2 on the other hand took a major complaint levied at its predecessor and delivered one of the most unique shooter campaigns we've seen in an awful long time. As Mark Brown of YouTube channel Game Maker's Toolkit points out, the story modes put fun ahead of everything else.

'Fallout 4' visual upgrade demands a monster PC

Fallout 4 is already a good-looking game (insofar as a nuclear wasteland can look good, anyway), but Bethesda is about to kick things up a notch. An update rolling out next week will add a High-Resolution Texture Pack that adds an absurd level of visual detail for PC players -- check out the rust and scratches on the power armor above if you need evidence. To say that this will demand a beefy system is an understatement, though. The developer recommends at least a 2015-era desktop Core i7 chip, 8GB of RAM, and a monster graphics card -- you should have either a GeForce GTX 1080 or (until Bethesda pulled mention of it) the as yet unreleased AMD Radeon RX 490. And did we mention that you need an extra 58GB of storage for all that new art?

'Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin' will launch on February 21st

It's been a long time since the first Psychonauts was released -- more than 10 years, in fact. However, developer Double Fine announced in late 2015 that it was bringing the series back with a pair of game: Psychonauts 2, a proper sequel, and Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin, a game for PlayStation VR meant to bridge the two titles. The latter title is just about ready to drop: Sony and Double Fine just announced that it'll be released on February 21st.
