Microsoft opens pre-orders for standard Xbox One X

Microsoft's Xbox One X is now available to pre-order. The console, touted as the most powerful ever (that claim excludes PCs, of course), will be out on November 7th worldwide. The company opened pre-orders for a special 'Project Scorpio' edition last month, but those ran out fast. In fact, Microsoft says it was "the fastest-selling Xbox pre-order ever." The regular version is basically the same, save for a tiny green Scorpio logo on the 1TB console and controller. It costs $499.99/£449.99 and is available now through the Microsoft Store, Microsoft.com and a host of local retailers.

New 'Wolfenstein' trailer is a reminder to always fight fascism

Nazis are the perfect video game enemy because they have zero redeeming qualities. It's something the Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus development team at Machine Games knows and the marketing department at publisher Bethesda Softworks is keen to capitalize on, especially given the current political climate. Watching the latest trailer, it's hard to not feel like it's a direct response to Donald Trump's "violence on both sides" statements regarding Klansmen, neo-Nazis, white supremacists and their counter-protesters from Charlottesville last month.

‘Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier’ multiplayer will test friendships

Planet of the Apes: Last Frontier is an entirely choice-based game. There are no real heroes or villains among the humans and apes you play as, and no right or wrong paths to take towards the conclusion of this choose your own adventure. Atypical of storytelling games, though, there's a multiplayer element that's almost meta. Not only do you have to resolve conflicts within the game, you also have to do it within your own living room, debating, persuading and occasionally forcing other players to accept your point of view to move the narrative forward.

US Navy will use Xbox controllers to steer submarine periscopes

The Pentagon might have to buy Xbox controllers en masse in the future if the military ends up using them to control its laser weapons and other equipment. In fact, the US Navy will begin stocking its modernized Virginia-class submarines with them, starting with the USS Colorado that's expected to be commissioned in November. Sailors aboard the high-tech submarine will use the Xbox controller to maneuver its periscope. See, unlike periscopes in movies, wherein a single person has to peer through an eyepiece, the high-tech version of the instrument uses high-resolution cameras and displays images on big screens.

'Zone of the Enders' PS4 remaster adds PSVR support

It's been a while since we've seen or heard anything about Zone of the Enders. The mech classic was created by Hideo Kojima, best known for the Metal Gear series, for the PS2 in 2001. A Game Boy Advance spin-off was released six months later, followed by Zone of the Enders 2 in 2003. A third console entry was considered, but eventually cancelled. Kojima might be gone (he's off doing his own thing now), but Konami has a plan to revive the franchise. A PS4 remaster titled Zone of the Enders: Anubis Mars will be out next spring with improved graphics and PlayStation VR support. Nice.

'Neko Atsume' is coming to PlayStation VR in 2018

Neko Atsume was the smartphone hit where you collected and fed cats. That was... mostly it. It also took over the lives of several of my friends, and was huge enough to warrant a movie spin-off in Japan. Apt, then, that Tokyo Game Show is where PlayStation Japan President Atsushi Morita announced a virtual reality version of the cat... feeding.. sim (?), with no more information beyond a 2018 release date on PSVR. But, if I get to role-play as cats, then consider me intrigued.
