Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Breaks Records With December U.S. Sales, Call Of Duty And Red Dead Redemption Still Hold Strong

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Breaks Records With December U.S. Sales, Call Of Duty And Red Dead Redemption Still Hold Strong

The last three months of any given year are especially contentious, but the fourth quarter of 2018 might be one of the biggest all-out brawls the industry has seen in a number of years. The rising tide truly lifted all boats this year, as the game industry as a whole reported $43.4 billion in revenue in 2018, which is up nearly 20 percent from the previous year. Winter made no small contribution to that number with major software sales across the board.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is by far the biggest seller of the month, topping the chart. The Switch exclusive debuted as the highest-selling exclusive, a game only released on one console, in NPD history. This list includes every Halo, Pokémon, PlayStation 2 Grand Theft Auto games, and even the recent Spider-Man. While it's hard to say whether the Nintendo fighting game will continue selling for the foreseeable future, the first month sales trajectory will likely make it the best selling game in the series, which is already the best selling fighting game series on the market. Between the physical sales and usual percentage of digital sales, which are not reported by the NPD, it's likely Smash Bros. sold somewhere north of four million units in the U.S. in December.

Bethesda Denies Fallout 76 Free-To-Play Rumors

Bethesda Denies Fallout 76 Free-To-Play Rumors

Over the past few days, a rumor on social media has been repeated across various message boards and subreddits about Fallout 76, Bethesda's embattled open-world survival game, being pulled from store shelves. The rumor suggests Bethesda is planning to relaunch the game as free-to-play, eschewing the $60 price tag it launched with in November. Bethesda has offered a brief, but direct tweet to counter the rumors.

There is no truth to this rumor.

While this confirms the rumor is false, it's not surprising it was able to take hold. The public perception of Fallout 76 is one of an ailing game that Bethesda is looking to either rehabilitate or wash its hands of to move on. Given the need to manage the Fallout brand, however, the publisher likely wants to keep the game going with improvements for a while longer before they consider anything as drastic as changing the entire payment model.

343 Teasing Halo: The Master Chief Collection News At SXSW

343 Industries is bringing Halo to SXSW in Texas in March for the Halo Championship Series Invitational. The tournament will be taking over the esports stage and more than $100,000 will be on the line for the players.

Arguably the more interesting tidbit from its tournament announcement, however, is the promise of some kind of announcement related to Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Next to the links detailing how to acquire tickets to the tournament on the blog post, 343 writes, "Not only will you be treated to amazing matches and gameplay, but we’ve also got some exciting [Halo: The Master Chief Collection] news to reveal during the show."

The tease could be any number of things. Maybe Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be making its way to PC, or maybe Halo: Reach will be added the collection as free or paid content.

From Software On The Possibility Of A Demon’s Souls Remaster

From Software On The Possibility Of A Demon’s Souls Remaster

Although most of our interviews and conversations with From Software revolved around the studio’s upcoming game, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, when the time came to chat with director and current From president Hidetaka Miyazaki, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to chat about the studio’s past works. With the recent release of Dark Souls: Remastered, it’s clear From isn’t opposed to revisiting its older games, so we decided to raise the question: Is there any chance of a Demon’s Souls remaster happening?

While Miyazaki thinks it’s possible, it’s not something he’s personally interested in. “It’s like when you write – when you’re younger, you look back on [previous work] and you think ‘Oh, goodness what was I thinking,’” he says. “It’s not that I’m embarrassed, I just don’t like to look at my previous works.” And while he’s not opposed to the idea of a remaster, it’s not exactly up to him, either: Sony would have to sign off on it as well. “You’d have to see what they’re thinking about it.”
