Battlefield Introduces Premium Friends Program

Developer DICE is introducing a new program to unite the online Battlefield community. Premium Friends looks to bring together players who have access to Battlefield 1's DLC maps with those who are unwilling or unable to shell out extra cash after their initial game purchase.

When a Battlefield 1 Premium Pass holder joins a party, the whole group of players becomes "Premium Enabled," allowing the whole team access to the bonus maps. Only the Premium Pass owners will be able to earn XP on the extra maps, but if a player decides to upgrade their Battlefield experience, then they'll be retroactively rewarded with all the XP they earned as a Premium Friend.

DICE will be testing out Premium Friends during the upcoming Battlefest event, which begins on March 30, with a full release to follow sometime thereafter. For more on Battlefield 1, check out GI's review, details on the recently-released Winter Update, and the trailer for the They Shall Not Pass expansion.

PSA: Xbox One Update Brings Beam Streaming, Changes To Guide Today

The Xbox One gets a pretty hefty update today that is meant to make streaming gameplay from the console easier for players by updating Guide navigation and utilizing Beam streaming.

After today's update, pressing the Xbox button on the controller will bring up the Guide as an overlay on the left side of the screen. The guide will display Games and Apps, Home, Store, recently launched games, and even deals for Xbox Live Gold subscribers.

Beam streaming will utilize a low-latency streaming to stream gameplay directly from the console to a live audience in real time, and can even be activated on the fly from the newly updated guide. Beam will be available on Windows 10 PC on April 11.

Heroes of the Storm Is Getting A Massive Progression Overhaul

With its next big patch, Blizzard's MOBA-esque brawler Heroes of the Storm is taking a page from the Overwatch book - loot chests! Loot chests will contain many of the cosmetics already available in the game in addition to banners, sprays, announcers, and emojis.

The progression system overhaul also changes the way levels work for characters and accounts, making things simple: your account level will simply be the sum of all hero levels obtained. The update also removes hero  level caps, meaning you can level forever and ever, while reaping the associated rewards.

The Secret World Rebooting As Free-To-Play MMORPG

Funcom has announced that its MMORPG The Secret World is going free to play, recasting itself as Secret World Legends this spring. The changes don't stop with the pay structure, as the game's combat and progress systems are being overhauled as well.

The new iteration of the game keeps the old one's story-based supernatural struggle in the modern world, and apart from the new combat, it also promises better graphics, an "improved flow of quests," and better onboarding for newcomers.

At this time no specific microtransactions have been detailed, but there is an optional Patron Rewards Program players can join for 30-day intervals that confers "extra features, additional convenience, and in-game bonuses" while you're paid up. Members of the current Secret World membership program can transfer that over to Legends' Patron program, including Grand Masters, who will be Patrons for life. Apart from the Patron program specifically, Funcom says that all future content will be free.

Nintendo Switch System Update Version 2.1.0 Now Available

It doesn't add any new features, but an update is available for the console today that brings it up to version 2.1.0.

You can find the patch note here. Normally we would use the words "notes" but there is only one listed update for 2.1.0. It reads, "General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience." After using the system following the patch, we didn't notice a different user experience or any U.I. changes.

Earlier this month we outlined five updates we want for Nintendo Switch right away. Unfortunately, none of those were addressed with this update.
