World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ new Torghast dungeon fixes the infinite grind problem

Torghast, Tower of the Damned, is one of the big, new features in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, the MMO’s eighth major expansion. The infinite dungeon — which allows players to go on runs, gain powers, and start from scratch after success or failure — takes inspiration from some of World of Warcraft’s greatest successes, like Mythic+ and the Mage Tower. But more than anything, Torghast solves the problem of infinite World of Warcraft grind in a balanced way.

Polygon spoke to Blizzard senior game designer Paul Kubit about Torghast’s rewards, structure, and how Torghast can change to fit any player.

Evo 2020 is going online, dropping Smash Bros. Ultimate from lineup

This year’s Evolution Championship Series (better known as Evo) has been canceled, but organizers are taking a version of the marquee fighting game tournament online. The format will be dramatically different; instead of a taking place over a single, long weekend, Evo Online will take place over the course of five weekends in July.

Evo 2020’s lineup has also changed somewhat for Evo Online, with Nintendo Switch fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate no longer part of the official tournament. Evo Online will feature “special exhibitions and content” from Evo 2020’s previously announced lineup:

Assassin’s Creed’s Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt free to promote learning at home

There is a rich history to each of Assassin’s Creed game’s settings, and Ubisoft explores that history in its Discovery Tour series. Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece for Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey and Discovery Tour: Ancient Egypt for Assassin’s Creed: Origins strips out the franchise’s brutal combat in favor of learning. And as part of Ubisoft’s Play Your Part, Play at Home pandemic campaign, the studio is offering both Discovery Tours for free over the next week.

Starting Thursday, players can log into their Uplay accounts on PC and download free copies of both Discovery Tours. Discovery Tour: Ancient Greece highlights the Classic Greece period, and features 29 regions to explore. Players can learn about daily life in the period, as well as Greek myths, legends, and philosophies. Discovery Tour: Ancient Egypt focuses on Ptolemaic Egypt. Players can take guided tours led by historians and Egyptologoists, focused on the culture and customs of Ancient Egypt.

One of VR’s best games finally comes to Oculus Quest

The amazing thing about Tetris Effect is that it works every single time.

I know that I can put on a virtual reality headset to play Tetris Effect and feel calm in about 15 minutes — no matter how bad I’m feeling, how stressed I’ve gotten, or how much I’m struggling with the day. It’s the most consistent game, delivering the most pleasant result, that I may have ever encountered in my career, if not my life. I don’t use these words lightly.

Crusader Kings 3 is more fun when you play it like The Sims

I’m only a few hours into a hands-on demo of Crusader Kings 3 when everything starts to go pear-shaped. Far from my duchy in Bohemia, the Battle of Hastings has just taken place, setting in motion an inevitable slide toward modernity. The clock is ticking, and it’s time to consolidate my power and lay the groundwork for my legacy.

My vassals are happy enough, it seems, and my wife — a Polish princess — has my back, securing the border with her father, one of my most powerful neighbors. So I decide to start a war, and that’s when things come crashing down around me.

Crusader Kings 3 assumes the throne on the 1st of September, AD 2020

After 15 expansions and more than a decade of continuous development, the reign of Crusader Kings 2 is coming to an end. One of the most valuable jewels in the crown of Swedish developer Paradox Interactive is ready for a refresh, and Crusader Kings 3 now finally has a release date. The epic grand strategy game is scheduled to launch Sept. 1 for $49.99, the company announced Thursday.

The Crusader Kings franchise is not your average grand strategy game. Players take on the role not of a country or even of a single ruler, but of an entire dynasty. The goal is to shepherd your line from the dawn of the Middle Ages into the Renaissance and beyond, through skill at arms but also cunning and treachery. Crusader Kings 3 is said to include many new innovations, but also a much larger geography than its predecessors.

Fallout 76 updates will add the Brotherhood of Steel, new seasonal rewards

Bethesda launched Wastelanders, the update all about NPCs and role-playing, for Fallout 76 in April. Now, the developer has released a roadmap for the rest of 2020 across two blog posts on its official site. There’s a lot of content coming, including a famous NPC faction from the Fallout franchise’s past.

The current “challenge” system in Fallout 76 is very simple: Players can complete tasks, like killing specific monsters or leveling up while wearing a certain piece of silly cosmetic gear, to earn Atom Points, which can then be spent on cosmetics and quality-of-life items in the Atomic Shop.

Free GTA 5 offer knocks Epic Games Store offline

The Epic Games Store went offline on Thursday morning as users anticipating the launch of Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto 5 for free on the platform overloaded its servers. News of the game’s free release leaked early on Wednesday on the Epic Games Store Twitter account.

The website and launcher both went down just before 11 a.m. EDT, when the Premium Edition of the game for Windows PC was scheduled to go live. “We are currently experiencing high traffic on the Epic Games Store,” Epic Games said on Twitter.
