No Man’s Sky players find discoveries wiped when returning to old planets

Animal, plant names aren't saving

The No Man's Sky community is currently swapping stories about what could be another of the game’s issues: animals, plants and other discoveries no longer appearing logged in the journal after revisiting planets. Several players report that their starting planets and other charted territories aren’t saving their finds, although the reason why is unclear and in dispute.

A Reddit thread by user Dark_Nexis kicked off the complaints. In a post, the player wrote of managing to make it all the way back to their first planet, only to find that everything other than the system and planet names was gone.

Vampyr’s first gameplay shows off a flu-riddled London

Unleash your vampire magic

New gameplay from Vampyr, the upcoming action role-playing title from Life is Strange developer Dontnod Entertainment, shows how players will stalk and kill their prey through investigation and conversation.

Vampyr takes place in 1918 London, where the city’s populus is being ravaged by an outbreak of influenza. The events of the game are based on the real-life flu pandemic, which occurred during the same time and infected around 500 million people across the world. The player takes control of Jonathan E. Reid, a doctor-turned-vampire who must choose who to kill in order to survive.

Will the theme be as hum-friendly?

Ramin Djawadi, a veteran composer of film, television and video games, is handling the orchestral score for Gears of War 4, publisher Microsoft Studios announced today.

Djawadi is perhaps best known for his work scoring every episode of HBO’s Game of Thrones, including its stirring and catchy title theme. He told the Associated Press that he worked to make the Gears 4 score "very different" from that of the beloved fantasy series — "even [though] we’re still using a lot of orchestra and percussion."

Yes, that’s a Poké Ball at your Target

My 6-year-old was right all along

If you’re a suburbanite like me, you’re no doubt familiar with the massive red spheres that adorn the front of most Target locations. Just how familiar you are with Target’s balls, I guess, depends on how many diapers you purchase on a monthly or weekly basis.

But I’m here to tell you that those balls are changing in a big way.

Final Fantasy 15's open world goes linear halfway through

Final Fantasy 15's open world goes linear halfway through

Second half plays more like a “conventional” Final Fantasy

The open world of Final Fantasy 15 will get narrower toward the latter part of the game, director Hajime Tabata told Famitsu. The Japanese magazine’s most recent issue dedicates a large section to the upcoming game, and Siliconera’s translation gives a better understanding of how the game balances its open world with classic RPG gameplay.

"The first half keeps going as an open-world, but the story in the second half is led by a linear path," Tabata said in an interview. "That way, you won’t get bored of an open world as the rest of the game gets tightened up, so we made it in a way that you’ll also get to advance through it as you have in conventional Final Fantasy games."

Obsidian's new RPG Tyranny will let you build your own magic spells

Obsidian's new RPG Tyranny will let you build your own magic spells

Magic is easier to make than you'd think

Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming role-playing gameTyranny, has a heavy classic vibe to it. Its isometric view, band of mages, rogues and warriors, and dungeon-diving fantasy gameplay will feel instantly familiar to anyone who's played games like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale — with some exception. The game will include a creation system for players to build their own magic spells.

At Gamescom 2016, Polygon got the chance to test out spell creation and its results in battle. There are a few key components: First, a player must pick the core of their spell. This is essentially its element — frost, fire lighting and so on. Once selected, you can set the expression of the spell, or how it will appear in battle. A bolt will offer a solid long-range choice, for example, while a cone adds  more damage to enemies in a wider space.

Once created, players can buff their abilities with accents, which add attributes that can increase damage, add additional range, buff stun times or more. As you pile on accents, however, the lore cost for each item will increase; if your character lacks the lore to match, they'll be unable to use it.

Resident Evil 7 plot, combat details outed by ESRB

A removed listing mentions shovels, "Ethan" and gore galore

Several plot and combat details from Resident Evil 7 biohazard were revealed by the ESRB earlier today, in a listing that has since been removed from the ratings board’s website. Among the information includes first confirmation of the game’s protagonist, as well as hints of just how much violence players can expect from the M-rated survival horror game.

The listing, whose details are preserved on sites like Gematsu and Wario64’s Twitter feed, states that a man named Ethan is the star of Resident Evil 7, in which he explores a "derelict mansion" in search of his wife. That name will sound familiar to viewers of the game’s latest trailer, where a woman is heard calling out to him.

Nintendo: ‘We need to do better job’ explaining NX to customers

Rumors continue to fly, but Nintendo still won’t say much

Nintendo is eager not to repeat past mistakes when launching its next game console, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said in a recent interview with A-List Daily. Among other things, that means the company must do "a better job" talking about the capabilities of the new system — known only by its codename, NX — than it did with the Wii U.

"One of the things that we have to do better when we launch the NX — we have to do a better job communicating the positioning for the product," Fils-Aime said. "We have to do a better job helping people to understand its uniqueness and what that means for the game playing experience."

Check out the trailer for "The Prelude," coming Sept. 9

NBA 2K17 doesn’t launch until Sept. 20, but interested parties can get a leg up on the game’s career mode with "The Prelude," a free download that will be available 11 days early, publisher 2K Sports announced today.

"The Prelude" will allow anyone on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to play the introduction of MyCareer, the NBA 2K series’ single-player RPG mode, starting Sept. 9. It’s also the first time since 2012 in which 2K Sports will offer a pre-release demo, or something like it, for an NBA 2K game.
