ZeniMax: We will prove Oculus stole VR trade secrets, destroyed evidence

ZeniMax Media, parent company of Doom creator id Software, will prove that Facebook-owned Oculus VR deliberately destroyed evidence in an attempt to cover up theft of some of the foundational elements of its virtual reality headset and the tech behind it, ZeniMax said in a statement released to Polygon today.

The comment comes as the $2 billion 2014 lawsuit over who actually created the tech behind the Oculus Rift headset goes to trial in a Dallas courtroom.

Graphic novel will celebrate the life of Gary Gygax, father of D&D

Journalist and author David Kushner, best known for his book Masters of Doom, is adapting his 2008 profile of Gary Gygax into a graphic novel. Called Rise of the Dungeon Master and illustrated by Koren Shadmi, the 144-page book is scheduled for release on May 9.

Kushner was among the last journalists to interview Gygax before his death at the age of 68. His feature story was published in Wired magazine days after Gygax’s death in March of 2008. It remains one of the most comprehensive firsthand accounts of the birth of Dungeons & Dragons, and the life of Gygax himself.

Nintendo Switch sold out at GameStop; good luck finding it elsewhere

If you're looking to pre-order a Nintendo Switch, you should look somewhere other than GameStop. The retailer sent word on Sunday that it has blown through its allotment of the new console.

In fact, if you're in the United States, looking elsewhere may be of no use. The Switch is unavailable for reserve, pre-order or otherwise at GameStop and the other major console gaming retailers here. Amazon, Target, Toys R Us, Walmart and Best Buy all list the console, which launches March 3, as unavailable, three days after pre-orders opened. Some still have accessories and games available for preorder.

Old concept art gives a peek at what the Darth Maul game could have been

Video game concepts come and go, but the ones that really linger in the consciousness are the canceled titles that draw on a very well known franchise. Thus, the legacy of a Darth Maul video game endures.

The semi-mute Sith Lord from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was the subject of a 2010 project that went nowhere. Red Fly Studio had gotten the assignment to build a game around the horn-headed bad mofo, after capably handling the Wii port of Star Wars: The Force Unleaded 2. LucasArts, typically, scrapped its development without much of an explanation why, as it did with Battlefront 3 and 1313 before Disney came in with adult supervision, in the form of an exclusive deal with Electronic Arts.

Titanfall 2’s next big update is pilot-only ‘Live Fire’

Titanfall 2 is introducing a new pilot-only mode to its multiplayer, called Live Fire, and it will be accompanied by two maps playable only in that mode. It will be available in the next title update, says Respawn Entertainment.

Live Fire will be a six-on-six multiplayer game without any Titans. According to this update, it's a best-of-five rounds mode without any respawns. Teams win by eliminating the other side or by possessing a flag when the counter runs out.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild takes up almost half of the Switch’s storage

The Nintendo Switch’s hardware specifications arched some eyebrows when it was revealed that, once again, Nintendo was launching a console with a shrimpy 32 GB of flash memory on board. Now we know what it really means to a user. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild requires 13.4 GB of storage space if it is downloaded to the Nintendo Switch. That is a little under half of the internal capacity of Nintendo’s new console.

That's if the user is opting for the digital version of the game, of course. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be available on a game card, too. And the Switch's storage is expandable by microSDHC and microSDXC cards, which are sold in volumes up to 128 GB. But it's unclear if the Switch dock's USB port can be used to attach an external hard drive for storage.

Lucasfilm: ‘No plans’ to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher in Star wars

Lucasfilm has responded to rumors that it would digitally recreate the late Carrie Fisher in one or both of the two remaining Star Wars episodes. The studio says it has no plans to do so.

"We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address," said the statement, given yesterday afternoon. "We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa."

How will the Nintendo Switch fare with sports games?

The Nintendo Switch’s 2017 lineup is promising so far, but perhaps not encouraging — and that includes the initial sports gaming support for the hybrid console.

During last night’s press event, Electronic Arts announced that it is bringing its FIFA series of soccer titles to the Nintendo Switch. A sizzle reel of upcoming games briefly showed a logo for 2K Sports’ NBA 2K18, and the publisher said this morning that a Switch version of the best-selling basketball franchise will be released this September. Following the event, Ubisoft announced that it is porting Steep to Switch this year.
