The Sims 4 is getting in-game music festivals with good vibes

The Sims 4 players will get a new stage to explore this summer, with an in-game musical event called Sims Sessions. Sims Sessions will run from June 26 through July 7, and includes artists like Bebe Rexha, Glass Animals lead singer Dave Bayley, and singer and songwriter Joy Oladokun.

The Sims franchise has a long history of collaborating with artists to bring their music into the game. Notably, every song has to be changed, because in the Sims everyone speaks Simlish — even the celebrity cameos. While songs are often used for promotional purposes, Sims Sessions will have them be integrated into the game world.

What if NBA Jam were a fighting game? It’d be Ultimate Rivals

Ben Freidlin knows what folks are looking at first when they see a screenshot of Ultimate Rivals: The Court. It’s usually the licensing. The celebrities. They’re gazing at Alex Morgan from the U.S. Women’s National Team, soaring high over Hall-of-Famer Wayne Gretzky. Neither one plays basketball, but she’s about to jam one in the Great One’s face.

Freidlin, chief executive of Bit Fry Game Studios, doesn’t deny that inking 60 all-stars from five sports to a licensing deal for a mobile video game is a hell of a head-turner. (The late David Stern, the former NBA commissioner and an investor in Bit Fry, told Sports Business Journal that anyone who could pull together that many leagues and players’ unions “deserves to be canonized.”) And Freidlin, a high school dropout, can share some stem-winders about that, too — but he’d rather focus on the game now.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a Vtuber now

Sonic the Hedgehog is celebrating his 30th birthday in the most delightful of ways — by getting into Vtubing.

On Thursday, Sonic’s official Japanese Twitter account posted a video of a Vtuber model that brings a 3D version of the classic character to life. In the video, we see Sonic talking and smiling, as he says, “Hey guys!” at the start of the video. The gimmick is part of an ongoing celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.

Xbox Game Pass is built into Windows 11

Windows 11, the next version of Microsoft’s operating system, will offer a number of features targeted toward PC gamers, led by Xbox Game Pass directly within Windows’ new Xbox app, Microsoft announced Thursday during its Windows 11 reveal event.

Presenting Windows 11 as “the best Windows ever for gaming,” Xbox corporate vice president Sarah Bond appeared on Microsoft’s livestream to announce that Xbox Game Pass will be “built right into Windows 11.” Microsoft has been testing this functionality for many months with a redesigned Xbox app for Windows 10, but clips of the Windows 11 version that Bond showed seemed to indicate a deeper integration.

The Demon Slayer video game is headed west, thanks to Sega

The Demon Slayer video game, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles, is coming to North America and Europe this October, thanks to publisher Sega. Developed by CyberConnect2, the video game based on the popular Demon Slayer anime will be released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC (via Steam), Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

CyberConnect2 is best known for its work on anime-inspired fare like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot and the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja and .hack games. The studio’s take on Demon Slayer looks on par with its brand of cel-shaded arena-based fighting and interactive storytelling. The Hinokami Chronicles will retell the Tanjiro Kamado, Unwavering Resolve Arc and Mugen Train Arc from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba.

Apex Legends brings back original Kings Canyon and World’s Edge for new event

Apex Legends players will return to the original Kings Canyon and World’s Edge maps in a new event, Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts announced Thursday. The Genesis Collection event starts June 29, runs through July 13, and adds limited-time cosmetics in addition to the restored maps. The event also comes with a host of balance changes, and we’ve listed Respawn’s official patch notes below.

Since Apex Legends first debuted in 2019, Respawn has shifted its maps around considerably. The developer has blown tunnels out to allow better access, and destroyed entire towns. Airships have crashed into mountains. And that’s just for the game’s original map, Kings Canyon. Most days, it’s impossible to experience these maps the way they were when players first encountered them. But Apex’s latest event changes that.

Free Dungeons & Dragons adventure on the way to celebrate Magic crossover

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, a Dungeons & Dragons-themed set of cards for Magic: The Gathering, is introducing something special — and free — for fans of D&D. A substantial role-playing adventure will be made available for download starting around June 29. Wizards made the announcement earlier this month during a private press event.

In the past, new sets of Magic cards have been heralded by some excellent digital fiction — lengthy and well-written short stories that set the mood for the coming cards. This time around, publisher Wizards of the Coast is taking a different tack. Instead of short stories, it’s releasing a module for characters level eight through 10. Meris Mullaley, world-building and narrative design manager at Wizards, said that there would be five adventures. Each will run between 15 and 20 pages in total.
